Resorts have been colonizing Nicaragua’s Pacific coast at a rapid pace in the past few years, but for international travelers to reach them required driving over two hours from Managua’s airport. Cutting the travel time significantly, the new Costa Esmeralda Airport, about 10 miles west of the town of Tola, will offer 30-minute connections from Managua via the Nicaraguan carrier La Costeña. The Costa Rican airline Sansa will also offer half-hour flights from Liberia, Costa Rica, to the new airport. A joint venture between the Nicaraguan government and Don Carlos Pellas, the owner of nearby Mukul Beach, Golf & Spa resort, the airport also serves private jets. Commercial service begins Nov. 14.
