Well, we may have all had to go through the unusual experience of an extended drought down here in our tropical paradise, but the weather has finally turned and the rain is back. And how!!
We have had rain every day for the last week to the tune of over 10 inches already and there is no end in sight. We are wet and very happy about it.
We want you to know that this is tremendous news and our wells and the ground water will quickly begin to regain their previous levels and we certainly won’t have to worry about hand watering or using our drip irrigation systems for quite some time now.
Want to know what rain in San Juan del Sur looks like? Here you go….
One thing to remind you of is our use of the amazing product called Solid Rain. This is a relatively new technology in farming, and it helps reduce the pressure on fresh water supplies. We began using this product to mitigate the effects of any future seasons where rainfall is reduced because, importantly, in wet periods like we are experiencing now the water is absorbed for later use reducing wasted water and rain caused damage.
Solid Rain is a potassium based powder which is capable of absorbing water up to 500 times its own size. It acts like an underground reservoir that retains water around the roots of plants which is then slowly dispersed into the soil keeping the plant hydrated. It helps encapsulate all the water that would regularly evaporate or just run off, making water available especially important in times of drought.
The Solid Rain is placed into the hole at the same level as the roots so it can absorb and store the moisture where it will be needed. The coconut trees are planted, the root ball covered with dirt and then watered. This water is then available to the plant for up to 2 months.
