Nicaraguans Give Thumbs Up to Police and Army in Latest Poll on Security in Nicaragua
The latest M & R poll shows that 93% of Nicaraguan families said that security had improved over the last year. This time last year only 63% thought it was better than the previous year. Most people asked said they had NOT been a victim of crime over the previous six months (and neither had any family members). 90% of respondents felt safe in their barrios (neighborhoods) and 71% reported that there were no gangs in their communities and 81% valued the work of the National Police.
The Army supports the National Police in providing security in relation to; border protection (in particular illegal aliens at the south border), cattle rustling, security of the coffee crop, natural disasters, the fight against drug trafficking, organized crime, national security, defense of territorial waters including the ports, airports etc. 90% of the public gave the Army a good or very good rating. 89% believe that the actions of the army create a barrier against drug trafficking and organized crime.
